Dr. Abdalla N. Al-Haj , first Saudi Medical Physicist to receive the International Organization of Medical Physicists Award
On the occasion of the worldwide celebration of the International Day of Medical Physics (IDMP) which is celebrated every 7th day of November, Abdalla N. Al-Haj was selected to be one of the recipients of the 2016 IDMP award by the international Organization of Medical Physicists (IOMP). The award recognizes excellence in Medical Physics with a particular view of promoting medical physics to a larger audience and highlighting the contributions medical physicists make for patient care.
Dr. Al-Haj has more than 30 years of experience as a medical and health Physicist at King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre (KFSHRC). Dr. Al-Haj is a national figure in field of radiation protection. His achievements gave impact on the national radiation protection programs of Saudi Arabia for the different radation protection standards that are now currently implemented in the Kingdom.
Dr. Al-Haj is an educator in the field of medical and health physics. He developed training programs for staff, students, members of the public and international fellows in the areas of radiation physics, dosimetry and radiation protection. He is a professorial lecturer in various universities and hospital in the Kingdom and Gulf Region. He was a professional lecturer of the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), an
international research institute funded by the Italian government and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and
Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). He is an IAEA expert on radation protection.
Dr. Al-Haj is a dedicated medical and health physicist promoting advances in medical and health physics education and recognition of Saudi medical physicists in the Kingdom and internationally through collaborations with international organizations such as the European Organization of Medical Physicists (EFOMP) and IOMP. He is one of the founders of the Saudi Medical Physics Society (SMPS) and the current president. He is also the current president of the Middle East Federation of Medical Physicists (MEFOMP). Dr. Al-Haj is the driving force for the celebration of the International Day of Medical Physics in the Kingdom.
